The lead at the top of the Premier League has changed hands again after Manchester City FC took up the mantle with a 2-0 win at Newcastle United FC which moved them a point clear.

Chelsea FC displaced Arsenal FC – in action at Aston Villa FC on Monday – courtesy of yesterday's 2-0 success at Hull City AFC, but the Blues' time at the top was shortlived as Manuel Pellegrini's men took the points in the north east.

Edin Džeko slid in Aleksandar Kolarov's cross from the left in just the eighth minute, yet City did not have everything their own way and required Joe Hart to produce outstanding stops from Yohan Cabaye and Loïc Rémy, while Cheick Tioté had a goal disallowed.

At the other end, Fernandinho headed against a post for the visitors, who lost Samir Nasri to injury but put the game to bed in the fifth minute of added time as Álvaro Negredo slotted past Tim Krul at the second attempt.

Liverpool FC jumped into fourth, five points behind the leaders, thanks to a thrilling 5-3 win at Stoke City FC. Ryan Shawcross deflected into his own net to put the Reds in front before Luis Suárez doubled the advantage.

Former Liverpool men Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam got the hosts level by the interval, but Steven Gerrard restored the visitors' lead with a second-half penalty. Suárez then finished a swift counter and although Jon Walters set up a nervy finish with an 85th-minute effort, Daniel Sturridge eventually killed the game off with Liverpool's fifth.
