AS Monaco FC's Radamel Falcao is likely to miss the remainder of the French season with a cruciate injury but has not abandoned hope of playing in the FIFA World Cup.
The 27-year-old Colombian has been sent for surgery after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Monaco's 3-0 French Cup win at Monts d'Or Azergues Foot on Wednesday. The club have not announced how long they expect Falcao to be absent for, but released a statement from the player, who said: "I do not conceal from you, my sadness is immense; my heart is broken, but some hope is enough to believe that my dream to participate in the World Cup is still alive. God makes possible the improbable and I believe in him."
A high-profile signing from Club Atlético de Madrid in the summer, Falcao has scored nine goals in 16 Ligue 1 games for his new side, who lie second in the table, five points adrift of champions Paris Saint-Germain. The Colombian's former team-mates at Atlético walked out for their Copa del Rey game against Athletic Club on Thursday wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan 'Fuerza Tigre' (courage Tigre) in the striker's honour.
