Bob Bradley will lead Stabæk Fotball in their first season back in the Norwegian top flight after being named as Petter Belsvik's successor.
Bradley, who recently left his post as coach of Egypt, has inked a three-year contract with the team who were promoted from the second division in 2013 following their relegation 12 months earlier.
"I am motivated by passion and I have found that at this club," said the American, 55. "The size of the crowd doesn't matter, but I know these people are passionate about their football.
"I am looking forward to building a side over the next few years. I like a challenge and I regard this as a particularly exciting one," added Bradley, who made his name in Major League Soccer (MLS) with successful stints at the helm of Chicago Fire, New York Red Bulls and CD Chivas USA.
He subsequently took charge of the United States from 2006–2011, leading his nation to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where they lost 2-1 to Ghana in the round of 16.
Stabæk, who report back for pre-season training next week, begin the 2014 campaign at home to Sogndal IL Fotball on 30 March.
