The former long-standing chairman of the UEFA Appeals Body, Dr Léon Straessle (Switzerland), has passed away at the age of 88.
Dr Straessle became chairman of the European governing body's appeals instance in 1988, and served in this position until 2002. He was also chairman of UEFA's disciplinary study group from 1990 to 1992.
He represented UEFA on various occasions at international level as an expert on sports legal matters, and during the 1990s played a decisive role in the modernisation of the regulations and development of UEFA's disciplinary authorities.
A member of the Amicale des Anciens circle of former UEFA committee members, Dr Straessle was awarded the UEFA Order of Merit in Diamond at the XXVIII Ordinary UEFA Congress in Limassol, Cyprus in 2004.
