FC Schalke showed no signs of rustiness following the Bundesliga winter break as they defeated struggling Hamburger SV 3-0 on Sunday.
The Königsblauen are up to fifth after registering their first away win in the league since 2 November, taking the lead on 34 minutes when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar headed Jefferson Farfán's right-wing cross into the top corner.
The game was taken away from HSV eight minutes after the break as Farfán beat home goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobný to a long ball forward, rounded the Czech international and rolled into an empty net. Shortly afterwards, Max Meyer slotted in a third to leave Hamburg third from bottom, despite Milan Badelj striking the post late on.
In the day's other game, bottom-of-the-table TSV Eintracht Braunschweig earned a hard-fought goalless stalemate at SV Werder Bremen. Philipp Bargfrede struck the woodwork for the hosts, who lie 11th, while Braunschweig are five points from safety.
