Stoke stun Manchester United

Charlie Adam was the hero for Stoke City FC as he struck two goals to help his side defeat Manchester United FC 2-1 and halt a run of three consecutive league defeats.

With fit-again duo Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney spearheading United's attack, the chances of Stoke ending their disappointing form looked slim. Van Persie did lift the ball over Asmir Begović to score for the eighth successive time against Stoke – a league first – but he could not prevent United slipping to an eighth league defeat this term. The Netherlands forward found the net between Adam's deflected free-kick in the first half and a superb effort from 25 metres after the break.

Sunderland AFC maintained their recent revival by repeating last season's 3-0 win at Newcastle United FC in the Tyne-Wear derby. Fabio Borini led the way with a 19th-minute penalty and Adam Johnson doubled the lead shortly afterwards, with Jack Colback's late strike wrapping up the points – the first time since 1923 that Sunderland have won three straight derbies.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjær oversaw his first Premier League win as Cardiff City FC beat Norwich City FC 2-1. Craig Bellamy hit the target for a record seventh different Premier League outfit and new signing Kenwyne Jones also registered for the Bluebirds. Elsewhere, Southampton FC prevailed 3-0 at Fulham FC, sending the Cottagers bottom, Everton FC moved fifth by beating Aston Villa FC 2-1 and Hull City AFC held Tottenham Hotspur FC 1-1.
