RSC Anderlecht have sacked coach John van den Brom and replaced him with assistant Besnik Hasi after suffering their ninth league defeat of the season at the weekend.
Saturday's 1-0 loss at Oud-Heverlee Leuven left the Belgian champions in third place, 12 points behind First League leaders R. Standard de Liège, and prompted the Brussels club to dismiss the Dutchman. "At this moment unfortunately there's no other option than to thank Van den Brom for his efforts these past two seasons," said Anderlecht chairman Roger Vanden Stock. "His firing is a shared responsibility from the board, the coach and the players."
The 47-year-old Van den Brom, a former Vitesse, AFC Ajax and Netherlands midfielder, joined Anderlecht in summer 2012 after one season in charge of both ADO Den Haag and Vitesse. He promptly led Les Mauves into the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in six years, and repeated the feat this term having guided the side to the title in 2012/13. He has now paid the price for Anderlecht's poor domestic form.
His replacement, Hasi, is a 42-year-old former Albanian international midfielder who has been assistant at Anderlecht – whom he represented between 2000 and 2006 – since ending his playing career in 2008. "Besnik Hasi know the club inside out," added general manager Herman Van Holsbeeck. "We as a board are convinced he has the qualities to shake this squad awake."
