FC Bayern München clinched an 18th straight Bundesliga victory against 1. FSV Mainz, but wins elsewhere for Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 put celebrations on hold.

To claim the league crown with a record-breaking eight matches to spare, Josep Guardiola's charges needed to prevail against Mainz and hope that both their Ruhr-region rivals were beaten. Guardiola's second-half introductions of substitutes Xherdan Shaqiri and Mario Götze turned the game: the former crossed for Bastian Schweinsteiger to head the opener with eight minutes to play. Schweinsteiger popped up to double the advantage at the death.

Dortmund won 3-0 at Hannover 96. Mats Hummels broke the deadlock before the break and Robert Lewandowski finished clinically shortly after the restart. Marco Reus tucked in a late third from an acute angle.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar hit his sixth goal inside three matches as Schalke's third win on the spin came at the expense of bottom club Eintracht Braunschweig, 3-1. VfB Stuttgart beat fellow strugglers Hamburger SV 1-0 to leapfrog their opponents, who had Hakan Çalhanoğlu sent off.

Kevin de Bruyne also saw red as VfL Wolfsburg drew 1-1 with FC Augsburg, losing sixth place to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, 3-0 winners against Hertha BSC Berlin.
