VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach closed in on the UEFA Champions League slots in Germany after winning a hard-fought game 1-0 at third-placed FC Schalke 04.

Patrick Herrmann fired into the corner from the edge of the area on 35 minutes to secure the points for the visitors, despite Ádám Szalai striking the woodwork for Schalke in the closing stages. The win takes Mönchengladbach to within three points of fourth-placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen, with Schalke a further three points better off – although Gladbach finish their season with tough games against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and VfL Wolfsburg.

Earlier in the day, Hamburger SV's hopes of escaping the relegation zone took another blow as they went down 3-1 at FC Augsburg. Halil Altıntop struck the opener into the top corner for the hosts just six minutes in, before doubling his tally just after the half hour. Andrè Hahn's long-range effort then made it three, meaning Heiko Westermann's consolation could not prevent a third successive defeat for HSV, which leaves them five points behind 15th-placed VfB Stuttgart.
