Welsh Cup win completes New Saints double

"It shows what fantastic characters we have in our squad," said The New Saints FC director of football Craig Harrison after his side overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat Aberystwyth Town FC 3-2 in the Welsh Cup final.

Two from Chris Venables, the Welsh Premier League's top goalscorer, had put Aberystwyth 2-0 up at half-time in Wrexham, but two second-half goals from substitute Greg Draper – the first from the penalty spot – brought TNS back into the match before Michael Wilde's 89th-minute strike turned the tables. Their fourth Welsh Cup victory completed a second domestic double in three years for the full-time outfit.

On 11 minutes, Chris Venables volleyed Aberytstwyth ahead as he capitalised on a well-placed free-kick, and he doubled the lead two minutes later when he struck past goalkeeper Paul Harrison from the penalty spot. TNS improved, but it took the arrival of Draper midway through the second half to turn the tide.

"It's up there as one of the best moments of my career," said Draper. "I was disappointed not to start, but I have to do my job when I get the chance, and they proved to be two very important goals."

Both clubs now turn their attentions to continental competition, with TNS once again preparing to compete in the UEFA Champions League, while Aberystwyth will compete in the UEFA Europa League, returning to Europe for the first time since 2004.
