Legia retain Ekstraklasa title

Legia Warszawa have been crowned Ekstraklasa champions without kicking a ball after rivals KKS Lech Poznań were held to a goalless home draw by mid-table MKS Pogoń Szczecin.

Victory for Lech would have left the capital club needing to beat Ruch Chorzów in Warsaw on Sunday to retain the title, but Henning Berg's men can now look forward to their final three fixtures safe in the knowledge they cannot be overhauled.

Berg took charge of the Army Men – for whom this is their tenth Polish crown – in December when he succeeded Jan Urban, and has not presided over a league defeat save for a 3-0 forfeit loss to Jagiellonia Białystok. Legia, who have won eight successive top-flight games, will equal a club record for consecutive victories if they triumph tomorrow.

"I felt Lech would not win against Pogoń and we would become champions today," said Legia's 13-goal top scorer Miroslaw Radović. "Discounting the European Cup [Legia were eliminated in the play-offs by FC Steaua Bucureşti], we've performed really well this season.

"Tomorrow we must play well for our fans. I am pretty sure we can dominate the Polish Ekstraklasa and will be in the Champions League [group stage] in three years at the latest."
