RCD Espanyol have promoted coach Sergio González to first-team duties with the club's former midfielder agreeing a two-year deal to replace Javier Aguirre at the helm.
The Periquitos began the search for a new boss after Aguirre ended his 18-month reign at the close of a campaign in which Espanyol finished 14th in the Liga. The two-time UEFA Cup runners-up have opted for Sergio, a former Copa del Rey winner with the Barcelona-based side who has recently been in charge of Espanyol B.
"Sergio knows the club well and we really like his personality," Espanyol sporting director Óscar Perarnau said of the decision to appoint the 37-year-old. "He has little experience but we all make a start one day and we believe he is more than capable."
Following four seasons as a central midfielder with Espanyol, Sergio moved to RC Deportivo La Coruña where he enjoyed UEFA Intertoto Cup, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup success. The ex-Spanish international's playing career – during which he scored 34 goals in 418 top-flight games – concluded at Levante UD in 2011.
