Two months after beating FC Steaua București on penalties in the Romanian Cup final, FC Astra Giurgiu repeated the trick to lift the Super Cup at the expense of the league champions.

Astra, runners-up to Steaua in the league last season, claimed their first ever trophy by defeating the Bucharest club in May's cup final after a goalless draw, and goalkeeper Silviu Lung produced three good saves in the first period of the Super Cup to keep his side level. Alexandru Chipciu gave Steaua the lead on the stroke of half-time, however, but Astra pressed forward more after the interval and equalised through Gabriel Enache's 74th-minute header.

With no further goals in normal or extra time, the match progressed to a shoot-out. While Astra converted all five of their penalties, Lung saved from Lucian Filip to give his side a second trophy for their cabinet at the National Arena.
