On 1 September 2014, a revised version of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List comes into force.

WADA has confirmed that Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF) activators xenon and argon will be added to Section S2.1 of the List.

WADA were alerted to the potential performance-enhancing characteristics of these substances earlier this year, and the WADA List Committee recommended adding them to the Prohibited List. This recommendation was approved by WADA's Executive Committee in May.

Following the change, S2.1 of the List reads as follows:

S2. PEPTIDE HORMONES, GROWTH FACTORS AND RELATED SUBSTANCES

The following substances, and other substances with similar chemical structure or similar biological effect(s), are prohibited:

1. Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents [e.g. erythropoietin (EPO), darbepoetin (dEPO), hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) stabilizers and activators (e.g. xenon, argon), methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta (CERA), peginesatide (Hematide)].
