Club Atlético de Madrid gained revenge for their UEFA Champions League final defeat as they beat Real Madrid CF to win their second Spanish Super Cup.

After equalising late on in the 1-1 first-leg draw at the Santiago Bernabéu, Atlético came out of the blocks at breakneck speed and created danger within the first minute. It was this initial burst that led to Croatian international Mario Mandžukić scoring after 81 seconds, the quickest-ever goal in the competition and his first since signing from FC Bayern München in July.

The European champions then clicked into gear and goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Moyà was forced into action by James Rodríguez. The Colombia playmaker had the best of Madrid's first-half opportunities, his closest effort a left-footed curler just past the far post.

Carlo Ancelotti introduced Cristiano Ronaldo at the break, however it was the home side who continued to enjoy the best openings. Raúl García met a Koke free-kick and his attempt crashed down off the underside of the crossbar before being clawed away by Iker Casillas, whose 13th Super Cup appearance broke Raúl González's club record.

Long-range shots from Koke and García flew over the bar with Casillas beaten as the game became stretched with the Whites throwing men forward in search of an equaliser. Midfielder Luka Modrić was dismissed in the 91st minute after receiving a second booking for a foul on Cristian Rodríguez as the Liga titleholders closed out the game to take their first Spanish Super Cup in 29 years.

"It looked as if things would be hard with the team-mates we lost but we believe in the group of players we have," said Koke. "The new boys have come in and look at how we have started. It's not revenge as we won the Liga, they won the Champions League, and now we have the Super Cup. This has just started, we are so proud. To compete against Madrid and Barça in the league is difficult. We will play our own game and see where it takes us."

"We lost control of the play, perhaps going too long," said Ancelotti. "We needed more possession, which is what we did well in the first half. In the second it was harder and we let them defend as they wanted. Cristiano Ronaldo could not play the full 90 minutes, so I thought I'd bring him on in the second half when the intensity had died down. We've never said the objective was to win six titles. We try to win as many titles as we can, hopefully getting more than the three we got last season."
