Mirko Slomka became the first coaching casualty of the new German season on Tuesday, as Hamburger SV replaced him with their Under-23 coach Josef Zinnbauer.
The only side to have featured in every Bundesliga season since the division was established in 1963, HSV flirted with relegation last season and took just one point from their first three games of this season, prompting the departure of Slomka – who had been in charge since February. "We would like to thank him and his coaching staff for avoiding a worst-case scenario last year, but we didn't feel the team was heading in a positive direction," said club CEO Dietmar Beiersdorfer.
Former VfB Oldenburg boss and Karlsruher SC assistant coach Zinnbauer, 44, has now been handed the reins, having led the Hamburg U23 side to eight straight competitive victories since taking command in the summer. "We are optimistic that Joe is the right solution for us right now," Beiersdorfer said. "He has what it takes to build enthusiasm in team and lead them back to success."
