Galatasaray AŞ collected their 20th Turkish title after Fenerbahçe SK's 2-2 draw at İstanbul Başakşehir FK on Monday left them with an unassailable lead at the top of the table.
Sunday's 2-0 Istanbul derby success against Beşiktaş had stretched the lead to six points, meaning Fenerbahçe had to win both their remaining games to keep hopes alive. However, they missed out on the three points in an eventful affair.
The Yellow Canaries ended the game with just seven men after the dismissals of Mehmet Topuz, Caner Erkin, Bruno Alves and Pierre Webó after the 84th minute. Başakşehir also missed a 95th-minute penalty. The hosts had taken the lead through Mehmet Batdal's double but Fenerbahçe hit back through Diego and Webó.
Galatasaray claim the title after an up-and-down season which saw Cesare Prandelli depart after a UEFA Champions League campaign that brought one draw and five losses from six group stage games. They were third in the domestic table when Hamza Hamzaoğlu arrived, the former left-back becoming the first man to lift the title as player and coach with the club.
"We are a team which were founded to be successful in Europe. Now we'll try to continue the achievements, picking up from where others left off," said Hamzaoğlu. "On the day I was offered the Galatasaray job my father had died. Each nice thing has a price to pay and happiness comes after pain. I hope my father is seeing this beautiful time. Let's all enjoy this thing."
The champions take on Bursaspor on 3 June in the Turkish Cup final.
