Former Netherlands striker Dick Nanninga – who scored for his country in the 1978 FIFA World Cup final – has died at the age of 66, his former club Roda announced on Tuesday.
"With great sadness we received the news this morning that club icon and former international Dick Nanninga passed away at the age of 66," read a club statement. "We wish his family and friends strength at this hard time."
Nanninga had been struggling with his health since 2012, but will be remembered for coming off the bench in the 1978 World Cup decider against Argentina and scoring the Oranje's equalising goal with a speciality header. The Netherlands eventually lost 3-1 after extra time.
Nanninga, who also featured at the 1980 UEFA European Championship, struck six goals in his 15 senior international appearances. He started his professional career with Veendam and became a legend with Roda, scoring a club record 107 Eredivisie goals in eight seasons. After a brief stint with Seiko Hongkong, he ended his career at Maastricht in 1986.
