UEFA Europa League first qualifying round contenders FC Koper collected the first silverware of the campaign in Slovenia by defeating champions NK Maribor 3-2 on penalties.

Playing on home turf, Rodolfo Vanoli's side held their nerve in the shoot-out after a goalless 120 minutes. Matej Palčič scored the decisive spot kick, sealing the south west club's second triumph in the annual season curtain-raiser – to win their first, in 2010, they also prevailed on penalties against Maribor.

Cup winners last term, Koper had only returned from Iceland, where they beat Víkingur Reykjavík 1-0 in the first instalment of their UEFA Europa League first qualifying round tie, on Saturday. The second leg takes place on Thursday.
