Griffiths elected in Wales

David Griffiths has been elected as the president of the Football Association of Wales (FAW) for a three-year term following an FAW council meeting in Cardiff.

"I have great respect for the office but at the same time I am looking forward to the great task ahead, which is also a major responsibility," explained Griffiths following his election.

Griffiths, 69, brings 50 years of football administration experience to the role, having held a number of positions within the FAW, UEFA and FIFA since being voted onto the FAW council in 1992 – including those of treasurer and senior vice-president. He is also a life president of the Welsh Football League and was one of the longest-serving club secretaries in the history of the domestic game in Wales, reaching 45 years with Maesteg Park.

During his time with the FAW, Griffiths has served as chairman of the board of directors, chairman of disciplinary and appeals commissions and chairman of the referees committee. He also sits as second vice-chairman on the UEFA Stadium and Security Committee, and represents the FAW within the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body comprising the British national associations and world body FIFA which determines the Laws of the Game.

"Hopefully we will host more international events in Wales," said Griffiths. "We need to be present on the international stage. Wales is a small footballing nation and we have to continue working hard to stay competitive. We can only succeed by doing that together.

"We must ensure that boys and girls keep coming to play football. We also have to create the infrastructure that will help us develop talents further, and get them to an elite level. I want to thank all the people who give their souls and stay loyal to our football in Wales."
