At its first meeting of the year, UEFA's Executive Committee will discuss a variety of important matters.
High on the agenda at the meeting taking place in Nyon on Thursday and Friday will be a discussion on the upcoming FIFA presidential election. The committee will also look at other political matters when it convenes at the House of European Football.
Goal-line technology (GLT) and its introduction in UEFA's competitions is also on the agenda in Nyon. On Wednesday, UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina explained the background to the discussions in a question-and-answer article published on UEFA.org.
"Regarding the specific timing," Collina said, "we are comfortable for the Executive Committee to make the decision now, because our review of the process has just concluded, and we also feel that with UEFA EURO 2016 around the corner, it is a good opportunity for UEFA to introduce GLT at a big tournament."
The Executive Committee's deliberations will also include an update on preparations for UEFA EURO 2016. Final work is ongoing to ensure the smooth and successful running of UEFA's premium national-team tournament, which takes place in France this summer.
The UEFA EURO 2016 finals will be the first to feature a 24-team field, and will take place from 10 June to 10 July this year at ten venues across France – Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Saint-Etienne, Nice, Paris and Saint-Denis. The draw for the final round took place in Paris in December.
The Executive Committee meeting will be followed on Friday by a gathering in Nyon of the presidents and general secretaries of UEFA's 54 member associations.
A press conference attended by UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino is scheduled for 15.00CET on Friday, and will be streamed live on UEFA.org.
