Pedro De Felipe, one of the most influential players in Real Madrid's 'Yé-Yé' side that won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1966, has passed away aged 71.
Madrid-born De Felipe was a key member of the Merengues team that dominated Spanish football in the 1960s. He rose through the club's academy and made his first-team debut at 19 after a year on loan at Rayo Vallecano, taking up the baton from veteran centre-back José Santamaría.
De Felipe is particularly fondly remembered for his performance in the 1966 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals, when he subdued Internazionale's Spanish playmaker Joaquín Peiró for both legs as Madrid beat the holders 2-1 on aggregate. As well as that triumph, he also won five Liga titles and one Spanish Cup and made a single appearance for his country.
He left after eight years to finish his career at Espanyol, later taking up the role of technical secretary there before becoming a player agent.
