France v Iceland: Women's EURO facts

• This game will bring back memories of Iceland's first-ever major tournament fixture, when they lost 3-1 to France to open UEFA Women's EURO 2009.

• Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir gave Iceland a dream start after six minutes but two penalties – one from Camille Abily, the other by Sonia Bompastor – prefigured a stunning Louisa Nécib goal to give France victory.

• The sides had also met in qualifying, where Iceland's 1-0 home win in June 2007 had alerted many people to their new ability to compete to reach major tournaments.

• France won the home return fixture to top the group but Iceland qualified through the play-offs.

• The teams then faced off in 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying with France prevailing 2-0 at home and 1-0 away.

• In fact, since that loss in Iceland ten years ago, France have gone on a European-record run of 41 straight qualifying group victories.

• The 2007 success is Iceland's only win against France in nine competitive meetings though they did hold them to a 3-3 home draw in the countries' first encounter in 1995 – a qualifier for the 1997 finals – losing the others.

• In those games France have scored 19 goals to Iceland's six; the sides have never met in a friendly.

• Iceland's Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir and France's Élise Bussaglia were colleagues at Wolfsburg.
