Marios N. Lefkaritis has retired from UEFA duties after more than 20 years – and his outstanding service to European football has been recognised with UEFA honorary membership.

Lefkaritis, from Cyprus, became the 13th current honorary member of the European governing body at the Ordinary UEFA Congress in Helsinki on Wednesday.

On the proposal of its Executive Committee, UEFA may award the status of honorary member to a person for especially meritorious services to the European game.

Limassol-born Lefkaritis has latterly served as a UEFA-vice president and treasurer, chairman of the UEFA Finance Committee and National Associations Committee, and special advisor to the HatTrick Committee.

Lefkaritis has served in a number of other roles within UEFA – he was, among others, chairman of the European Under-21 Championship Committee, and vice-chairman of the European Championship Committee, National Associations Committee and EURO 2008 SA Board.

He entered football administration with a five-year spell on the board of Cypriot club Apollon Limassol FC from 1972 to 1977.

Admitted to the board of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) in 1985, he served as the association’s president for a decade from 1991, before becoming honorary president.
