Former France striker Stéphane Paille has passed away following a short illness.

Paille, who died in Lyon on his 52nd birthday, won eight caps for France, scoring once, and was part of the side that won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 1988, forming a potent attacking partnership with Eric Cantona.

Having helped Sochaux reach the Coupe de France final in 1988, Paille went on to have a nomadic club career, representing Montpellier, Bordeaux, Caen and Lyon in his homeland; he also had spells abroad with Porto, Servette, Mulhouse and Hearts.

Having hung up his boots in 1997 after 15 seasons as a professional, Paille moved into coaching. His last job was in Algeria with JSM Bejaya in 2015.
