Former England international Paul Madeley, who made well over 700 appearances for Leeds United in all competitions, has died at the age of 73.
Described as "seven top-class players in one" by team-mate John Giles, Madeley was a master utility man. Right-back may have been his best position, but during his 17-year spell with his home-town club (1963–80) he wore every shirt number from No2 to No12 – in an era when shirt numbers corresponded with playing positions.
During his time at Elland Road, Leeds won two league titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup as well as two editions of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup – the non-UEFA affiliated predecessor of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League. Capped 24 times by England, he also reached the 1975 European Cup final, Leeds losing 2-0 to Bayern München in Paris.
