A week after the pleasure of lifting the inaugural UEFA Europa League Club Atlético de Madrid endured the pain of Copa del Rey disappointment as Sevilla FC claimed the trophy for a fifth time with a 2-0 victory at Camp Nou.

An opportunistic early goal from Diego Capel set Sevilla on their way though the final was in the balance until the first minute of added time when Jesús Navas broke, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted in to spark the celebrations. True to club president José María del Nido's words: 71 years after claiming the Copa del Rey in Barcelona Sevilla did it again.

His side had a dream start. They were ahead inside five minutes when Capel reacted quickest after Navas's shot cannoned back off Álvaro Domínguez's chest, putting it on his left foot and driving the ball past David de Gea from the edge of the box. Atlético were rocked, but far from uprooted. They were soon on the attack themselves, and it took incredible last-ditch blocks from defender Sébastien Squillaci to keep out Sergio Agüero and then Diego Forlán.

Celebrating his 31st birthday, Forlán was doing his best to outwit a well-marshalled Sevilla defence, testing Andrés Palop before and after the break. Tiago also warmed the goalkeeper's gloves but Sevilla were ever a threat on the counterattack. Álvaro Negredo spurned a fine chance when he fired straight at De Gea after latching on to Frédéric Kanouté's exquisite back heel, but it mattered not when Navas burst clear, beat De Gea and squeezed the ball past Domínguez on the line. The trophy was Sevilla's.
