Erik Gerets has resigned as coach of VfL Wolfsburg after 14 months at the Bundesliga club.

'Great football'
The former Belgium international announced his decision on Saturday afternoon. "The team was in the relegation zone when I took over 14 months ago, but we managed to avoid the drop and this season we played great football before the winter break," he said. "Numerous reasons led to my decision and nobody should have to take the blame."

'Sad'
Lothar Sander, chairman of Wolfsburg's supervisory board, was disappointed to learn the news. "We respect his decision but are sad to see him go," Sander said. "We would like to thank him for his commitment. We wish him all the best for the future."

Ninth place
Wolfsburg finished ninth this season, with 15 wins and 48 points from 34 games.
