Nuri to spend year at Feyenoord

Feyenoord have signed teenaged Turkish international Nuri Şahin on a one-year loan from BV Borussia Dortmund.

Record breaker
Playmaker Nuri, 18, came to prominence as the star of Turkey's victory at the 2005 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, going on to win the Bronze Ball as the third-best player at the subsequent FIFA U-17 World Cup. The same year he became both the youngest player and youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history before making his full debut for Turkey, scoring in a 2-1 friendly defeat of Germany, his country of birth.

High aims
Nuri, once described by Arsène Wenger as "one of the world's biggest talents", has welcomed the temporary move to the Netherlands. "I'm really looking forward to playing here and I think this transfer is very good for my development," he said. "My aim is to play as much as possible, and when I look at the squad I think we could get in among the medals." Nuri managed just eleven starts for Dortmund last season, taking his Bundesliga appearance total to 47.

'Unbelievable technique'
It was recently-appointed Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk who gave Nuri his break while in charge at Dortmund, a role he relinquished last December, and the Dutchman is delighted to welcome the youngster to Rotterdam. "Nuri is a versatile left-footed player with unbelievable technique," Van Marwijk said. "He can play anywhere in midfield, but with all the new arrivals he was in danger of dropping down the pecking order at Borussia. That's why Nuri really wanted to come to Feyenoord - to have more opportunities to play."
