Relegation-threatened Premier League club Sunderland AFC are looking for a new manager after the departure of Martin O'Neill.

Sunderland lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United FC and are just one point above the bottom three after an eight-game winless run. O'Neill, 61, had been in charge since December 2011 having previously managed clubs including Leicester City FC, Celtic FC and Aston Villa FC.

A club statement read: "Sunderland AFC has announced that it has parted company with manager Martin O'Neill this evening. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Martin and wishes him well for the future. An announcement will be made in the coming days regarding a successor."
