Simonsen to step down

Members

Allan Simonsen will step down as coach of the Faroe Islands next month and has expressed his interest in the vacant Scotland manager's job.

New challenges
Simonsen, who has been linked with the vacant post of Scotland manager, has expressed his desire to try out new challenges after eight years in charge of the Faroes.

'Interested in coaching Scotland'
Simonsen, who admits that he has several options to choose from, said: "I think that most international coaches in the whole of Europe would be interested in coaching Scotland and I am no different. It would be a great honour to coach the Scottish national team - even though they are not going to the World Cup."

Faroe limitations
Reflecting on his time in charge of the Faroes, who finished fourth in their 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, the former Danish star said: "The Faroes have been good to me, but the problem is that they are very small country and there are limitations to what you can do because we certainly don't have the same number of players as you would have in Scotland."

European Footballer of the Year
Simonsen was voted European Footballer of the Year in 1977 and played for FC Barcelona and VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach among others. He won two 1. Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Cups with Mönchengladbach, as well as scoring 21 goals in 43 caps for Denmark.
