ZTE turn to Gellei

Members

Former Hungary coach Imre Gellei has returned to football by taking charge of his old team, Zalaegerszegi TE.

Mihalecz out
The 2001/02 champions have had a terrible season, and Gellei finds himself in charge of a team occupying last place in the first division. The 53-year-old has signed a six-month contract, following the dismissal of István Mihalecz after Saturday's 1-0 friendly defeat by ŠK Slovan Bratislava.

Still hope
Despite the challenge facing him, Gellei said: "I know this city loves football and this gives us a hope." His first spell at the club lasted for three years from 1983. Mihalecz first offered to stand down before Christmas, despite only being appointed in September.

Looking ahead
Gellei quit as Hungary coach last November after failing to guide the team to the UEFA EURO 2004™ finals in Portugal. Lothar Matthäus replaced Gellei and will have the task of leading Hungary through the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
