Article body
UEFA has today started disciplinary proceedings against The Football Association of England in relation to 'racist abuse by English supporters' at the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying match on 2 April between England and Turkey. This follows a review of the material evidence, including an official complaint by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).
Improper conduct
This charge will be added to charges already brought for pitch incursions by spectators and the improper conduct of officials in the tunnel after the match. Disciplinary proceedings have also been instigated against the TFF for the improper conduct of players in the tunnel after the match. Both cases will be dealt with at the next plenary meeting of UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body on 1 May.
'Widen the case'
Commenting on the decision, UEFA's Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Mike Lee, said: "Having reviewed the match England v Turkey of 2 April, UEFA has decided to widen the case against The FA to include racist abuse by supporters – they have until 21 April to submit their response.
Detailed evidence
"Detailed evidence will now be supplied to our Control and Disciplinary Body for their meeting on 1 May and all issues relating to this match will be dealt with at that meeting."
