Article body
Six-point gap
Their 4-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers FC leaves the Elland Road side in 18th place, six points behind fourth-bottom Manchester City FC with two matches remaining. Although Leeds could yet match City's points total, their goal difference is minus 35 to City's minus two.
Champions in 1992
Leeds, who will join Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Leicester City FC, in dropping out of the Premiership, were last in English football's second tier in 1990. After winning promotion back to the top flight in May that year, they were crowned champions within two seasons when they pipped Manchester United FC to the 1992 league title.
Massive debt
More silverware seemed imminent when, under manager David O'Leary, they reached the last four of the Champions League in 2000/01 but Leeds have since gone into freefall after accruing a massive debt and, despite the recent sale of the club, they now face an uncertain future.
Viduka sent off
Leeds had started well at the Reebok Stadium, Mark Viduka putting them ahead from the penalty spot after an Emerson Thome foul on Alan Smith. But after Viduka's dismissal for a second bookable offence before half-time - he put his arm into the face of Bolton's Bruno N'Gotty - they fell apart in the second half.
Djorkaeff double
Youri Djorkaeff equalised just two minutes into the second half, and after the Frenchman's second goal on 53 minutes, Ian Harte put into his own net two minutes later to make it 3-1. Kevin Nolan added Bolton's fourth in the closing stages.
Liverpool win
Elsewhere in the Premiership, Liverpool FC beat Middlesbrough FC 2-0 to boost their hopes of claiming fourth place. Danny Murphy broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after 48 minutes and substitute Emile Heskey doubled the lead shortly afterwards.
Angel delight
Liverpool have 56 points from 36 matches, a point more than Aston Villa FC who were 1-0 winners at home to Tottenham Hotspur FC thanks to Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel's fifth-minute header.
