Zidane bows out with Bernabéu goal

Zinédine Zidane scored in his final appearance at the Santiago Bernabéu as Real Madrid CF played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Villarreal CF.

Julio Baptista put the home side in front on 23 minutes, before Villarreal edged in front thanks to an own goal from Álvaro Mejía and Diego Forlán's strike six minutes before the break. Zidane struck midway through the second half, but it appeared his efforts would be in vain when an 86th-minute handball resulted in a red card for Sergio Ramos and a Villarreal penalty, duly dispatched by Forlán.

However, there was still time for Baptista to grab his second goal and ensure Madrid move a point ahead of Valencia CF in second place with a round of matches to come next weekend. The Madrid crowd and players paid tribute to Zidane, who retires after this summer's FIFA World Cup, before the match.

Osasuna slip
Elsewhere, CA Osasuna missed a golden chance to seal their place in next season's UEFA Champions League when they conceded two late goals in a 2-1 defeat against Real Racing Club Santander. Cádiz CF were relegated after losing 3-1 to Getafe CF and will join Málaga CF in the second division after just one season in the top flight. There were also wins for Real Betis Balompié, 2-1 against RCD Mallorca, and Real Zaragoza, 3-0 at home to Deportivo Alavés.
