Aston Villa FC have signed England Under-21 captain Nigel Reo-Coker in a €12.6m move from West Ham United FC having allowed Steven Davis to join Fulham FC for a reported €6m fee.
Key role
Villa and West Ham agreed the terms of the transfer yesterday before Reo-Coker finalised his switch at Villa Park today. The 23-year-old had captained West Ham to Premier League promotion in 2004/05 before leading them in their last two campaigns, including the 2006 FA Cup final. He played a key role in ensuring West Ham's survival on the last day of the 2006/07 season before skippering his country to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship last month.
Best wishes
Reo-Coker had been at West Ham since arriving from lower league outfit MK Dons in January 2004, and a club statement said: "We would like to thank Nigel for his service during the past three and a half years, and wish him every success." West Ham have already bought a replacement for the outgoing midfielder with English international Scott Parker recruited from Newcastle United FC.
'Right decision'
Northern Irish international Davis had come through the ranks at Villa, making his league debut in September 2004. Though a firm fans' favourite, the 22-year-old was wanted by Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez who previously worked with the player during his time in charge of Northern Ireland. After penning a four-year contract, he said: "Leaving was not an easy choice to make. Although it is sad to be leaving Villa, I know this is the right decision for me and my future."
