Technical specifications

Below are technical requirements for using the Pitchtape video recorder.

How do I record a video using Pitchtape?

Your videos must be recorded through our platform on your laptop/desktop computer or mobile device using the Google Chrome browser. At this time, you cannot upload your own videos. Please make sure you are using the latest version of Chrome.

If you are experiencing issues, please try the following:

  • Restart your Chrome browser and/or your device.
  • Update your Chrome browser by visiting chrome://settings/help.
  • Clear your Chrome cache by visiting chrome://history/ and selecting 'Clear browsing data.'
Can I record a video on a mobile device?

Mobile recording may or may not be disabled for a particular event. If, when logged in to your account on a mobile device, you see a message to use your laptop or desktop computer, then mobile recording is disabled and you cannot use your mobile device.

If mobile recording is enabled, you can record your video through our platform on your mobile device using the Google Chrome app.

To record on a mobile device, you must turn your phone horizontally and use your front-facing camera. Please also make sure to turn off your phone's portrait orientation lock.

Once you start recording video topics on your mobile device, you must fully complete all video topics using the same mobile device. For example:

  • Do not record some video topics on one mobile device and other video topics on another mobile device.
  • Do not record some video topics on iOS and other video topics on Android.
  • Do not record some video topics on a mobile device and other video topics on a laptop or desktop device.

Similarly, once you start recording video topics on your laptop or desktop computer, you must fully complete all video topics using the same laptop or desktop computer.

Additionally, do not refresh your browser while recording a video topic.

Please note that video recording is not compatible with iPads or other tablets. To use the Pitchtape video recorder on your mobile device, your device must meet the following requirements:

iOS (mobile)
iOS 14.3 or above
Compatible with iPhone
Not compatible with iPadOS

Android (mobile)
Android 6.0 Marshmallow or above
Not compatible with Android Go edition

How does the Pitchtape video recorder work?

With Pitchtape you can record your video one topic at a time in short segments. The powered technology will automatically stitch your topics together into one seamless pitch video.

On the recorder screen, you will see a list of video topics. To record a video for a topic, select the topic by clicking on the topic name. The video icon and topic name will turn red when the topic is selected.

On the recorder screen, you will also see instructions to limit your pitch video to a certain length. Please make sure to follow these instructions. Failure to follow these instructions could negatively affect your submission.

Once all topics are recorded, click on the stitch video button to complete your pitch video.

You will receive an email when your pitch video has been processed. You can also refresh your screen periodically while on the profile page to check if your video has been processed.

How long does it take for my video to process?

Video processing speeds vary depending on a number of factors, including the length of your video and your internet connection. We recommend at least 5mbps upload speed: test your upload speed.

On a stable connection, video processing should not take more than a few minutes for videos under 5 minutes at 720p recording quality.

However, if you record a long video and your upload speed is on the lower end, then the processing time will increase.

Please wait at least 15 minutes after completing your video for your video to process, and do not close the browser tab until you are able to play the video you recorded.

What if my camera and microphone aren't working?

Please ensure that your computer camera and microphone are WebRTC compatible with a camera resolution of at least 720 pixels. After running the WebRTC test, click on 'Camera' then 'Check supported resolutions' and make sure that the supported resolutions include 1280x720.

If your camera and/or microphone are still not working, please check your computer's system preferences, navigate to Camera or Sound and check if there is any indication of a disabled camera or muted microphone.

If your camera and microphone are working properly on the test site, make sure to allow access to your camera and microphone on Pitchtape by:

  • clicking the secure lock to the left of the Pitchtape URL,
  • clicking on 'Site settings,' and
  • selecting 'Allow' for camera and microphone.

After doing so, you may need to restart your Chrome browser. If you are still experiencing issues, please make sure your default camera is correct here: chrome://settings/content/camera. You can also do this by:

  • clicking the video icon to the right of the Pitchtape URL,
  • clicking on ‘Manage,’
  • clicking on ‘Camera’ under Permissions, and
  • selecting the correct camera.

You may also need to disable a camera through your Device Manager by following the steps below:

  • Right-click the Start button.
  • Click Device Manager.
  • Click the drop-down arrow next to Cameras.
  • Right-click the Camera you do NOT WANT TO USE.
  • Click Disable.
  • Click Yes.

When you wish to re-enable this camera, follow these steps again to Enable the device.

What if audio isn’t working when downloading my video?

If you are experiencing audio issues on the downloaded version of your video, please drag the downloaded video file from your computer into the Google Chrome browser. You should then be able to play the video with audio.

My team is remote and we would like multiple people to be in our video. Is that possible?

With Pitchtape you can record your video one topic at a time in short segments. The powered technology will automatically stitch your topics together into one seamless video. So, you can share your log-in credentials and have each team member record their specific video topic. When the last person is done recording, they can click to complete the video.

However, please note the following when recording as a team:

  • Team recording is only available if all team members are recording on a laptop or desktop computer. You cannot utilise team recording on a mobile device.
  • Team recording is only available if all team members record in landscape mode and have the same camera resolutions. Your video will not be processed if topics are recorded in different resolutions.

Video pitch tips

Be yourself

This means being relaxed enough to let your personality shine through. When that happens, you’re best able to convey the passion you’ve put into your business. Take several deep breaths. Practise saying your answers out loud, remember to smile, and have fun with it. When you're ready, hit record, look at the camera to make eye contact, and begin.

It's about you

Your video pitch is about you, not your video-production skills. Keep it limited to you/your team talking (e.g. no product demos, marketing videos, screenshots, animations, or video-editing).

Set the stage

Pick a clean background and quiet setting. Good lighting is key. Choose either natural light shining from behind the camera, or lamps shining on you from both sides of the camera. Set up the camera at your eye level or higher, and far enough away to capture at least your head and shoulders.

Replicate a live pitch

Make your video more authentic by imagining you’re doing a live pitch. With Pitchtape, you can self-record your video pitch through our platform on your laptop or desktop computer. Imagine that your ideal audience is sitting just behind your computer, listening to your pitch.

Prepare a script

Put your best foot forward by preparing a script ahead of time. With Pitchtape, you can prepare your script in your dashboard, and we'll turn it into an on-screen teleprompter as you record your video pitch, so you can record less takes and look natural on camera.

Take it one topic at a time

Recording a video pitch doesn't have to be daunting. Just take it one topic at a time. With Pitchtape, you can break down the information you want to share into small segments. At the end, our video-stitching technology automatically stitches together all of your segments into one seamless pitch.

Keep it short

Keep your content concise and engaging. Remember that this is meant to be your elevator pitch, so aim to provide a brief but meaningful answer to each video topic without overwhelming the viewer with excessive information.

Replay your video

Replay your video to make sure the recording worked properly. If you can't see or hear yourself clearly, or if you want to make any adjustments, retake your video until you're satisfied.
