Benzema renews Lyon commitment

France Under-19 international Karim Benzema has signed a two-year extension at Olympique Lyonnais, tying him to the French champions until 2010.

Exciting prospect
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in French football and was thrilled to sign the agreement with his hometown club, saying: "It's very good for me to extend my contract with one of the best teams in Europe. Competition for matches will be even higher this season, but I'm ready for that challenge."

European debut
Benzema started four league games last season scoring one goal and broke the deadlock in his only UEFA Champions League appearance to date as his side won 2-0 against Rosenborg BK at the Stade Gerland on 6 December. Lyon start next season's UEFA Champions League in the group stage.
