Deadline day transfer round-up

The January transfer window has closed, with numerous clubs across the continent having taken the opportunity to strengthen their squads for the final time this season.

The European domestic transfer window has closed, with the major move being finalised late on as Fernando Torres joined Chelsea FC for a British-record fee. All signings made by clubs in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League have been covered throughout the month, while other significant moves made on deadline day can be found below.

UEFA Europa League: Liverpool FC have used the money received from Fernando Torres's record sale to Chelsea FC to help fund moves for Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll, who both arrive on five-and-a-half year contracts − full story.

Alessandro Matri has left Cagliari Calcio for Juventus on loan, though there is an option for a permanent transfer in the summer for a fee of €15.5m. The AC Milan academy product has scored 36 goals in 125 Serie A appearances for Cagliari. Matri will replace Amauri in Turin after the striker joined Parma FC for the remainder of the campaign.

Feyenoord have signed three players on loan for the rest of the season as they look to stave off relegation from the Eredivisie. Ryo Miyaichi (18, Arsenal FC), Søren Larsen (29, Toulouse FC) and Marcel Meeuwis (30, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach) are the players concerned, while the Rotterdam club announced that Dutch Under-19 international striker Luc Castaignos, 18, will join FC Internazionale Milano in the summer. Meanwhile, Michael Lumb, signed on a season-long loan from FC Zenit St Petersburg, has moved to Aalborg BK in his native Denmark for the rest of the campaign.

RCD Deportivo La Coruña have also brought in a trio of players on loan until the end of the season. Newcastle United FC forward Xisco, 27-year-old Aris Thessaloniki FC midfielder Javito and Argentinian striker José Gustavo Sand have all joined, with the club holding the chance to sign the latter from Al Ain SCC on a permanent deal in the summer.

UEFA Europa League: VfB Stuttgart have signed Hungarian international midfielder Tamás Hajnal on loan from Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund. Rangers FC and Sporting Clube de Portugalhave also been strengthening.

Belarus striker Sergei Kornilenko has moved from FC Zenit St Petersburg to Blackpool FC on loan until the end of the season. The 27-year-old, who has been capped 42 times and scored nine international goals, had temporary spells last year at FC Tom Tomsk and FC Rubin Kazan, where he made four UEFA Champions League group stage appearances. The former FC Dynamo Kyiv forward joins James Beattie, Andy Reid and Jason Puncheon as a quartet of deadline day arrivals at Bloomfield Road.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Blackburn Rovers FC have signed FC Barcelona's 19-year-old striker Rubén Rochina on a four-and-a-half year deal, while former Azulgrana forward Eidur Gudjohnsen has been loaned by Stoke City FC to Fulham FC until the end of the season. Aston Villa FC have followed the permanent acquisition of England striker Darren Bent for a club-record fee with the loan signing of United States midfielder Michael Bradley. The 23-year-old arrives in the Premier League from VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Calcio Catania have acquired three new players, meanwhile, bringing in Francesco Lodi, Gonzalo Bergessio and Ezequiel Schelotto. Lodi has arrived in a co-ownership deal with Serie B side Empoli FC, while Bergessio, also 26, comes on loan – with a view to a permanent deal – from AS Saint-Etienne. Fellow Argentinian Schelotto, 21, also moves to Sicily for the remainder of the campaign, from Atalanta BC.

Villarreal CF have allowed wide midfielder Jefferson Montero to join UD Levante on loan until the summer. The 21-year-old Ecuadorean international featured five times in the Yellow Submarine's UEFA Europa League group stage campaign.

Real Madrid CF central defender David Mateos has agreed to join AEK Athens FC on loan for the remainder of the season. The 23-year-old – a product of the Liga club's youth academy – made a brief appearance for the Merengues in their UEFA Champions League group stage triumph at AFC Ajax in November.

VfL Wolfsburg have announced five new additions to their squad. Turkey striker Tuncay Şanlı, Germany striker Patrick Helmes and Korea Republic midfielder Ja-Cheol Gu have signed until 2014 having moved from Stoke City FC, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Jeju United FC respectively. Steve McClaren has also taken Czech Republic midfielder Jan Polák from RSC Anderlecht and Venezuela's Yohandry Orozco from Zulia FC. "The club worked hard for these players and in the end it was worth it," said McClaren.

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins has returned to the Premier League, moving on loan from FC Rubin Kazan to Birmingham City FC until the end of the season. "He has great pace, is two-footed, very good in the air for his size and I'm sure he's a signing that will excite the fans," said Birmingham manager Alex McLeish. The former Newcastle United FC frontman has made 12 league appearances for Rubin.

UEFA Europa League: Sporting Clube de Portugal have announced the departure of talismanic striker Liedson to former club SC Corinthians Paulista. The 33-year-old Portuguese international scored 114 league goals in 213 appearances for the Lions, who face Rangers FC in the round of 32. They have also secured the services of winger Cristiano Oliveira on a free transfer − full story.

Brescia Calcio have signed ex-Italian international Cristiano Zanetti from ACF Fiorentina. The 33-year-old former AS Roma and Juventus midfielder, who was a UEFA Champions League semi-finalist with FC Internazionale Milano in 2003, joined the Viola for the second time in summer 2009. He has made just six Serie A appearances this season. Fiorentina, meanwhile, have announced the arrival of Vicenza Calcio midfielder Amidu Salifu.

Nelson Rivas has joined FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on loan from Inter until the end of the season, with the option of a permanent move in the summer. The 27-year-old centre-back has been a peripheral figure at San Siro since arriving in summer 2007 from Colombia's Asociación Deportivo Cali and spent the latter half of last term on loan with AS Livorno Calcio. His sole appearance this campaign came in the Coppa Italia earlier this month. Juande Ramos's team are fourth in the Ukrainian Premier League ahead of the second half of the season, which begins on 5 March.

AC Arles-Avignon, Ligue 1's bottom club, have brought Romain Rocchi back to France from Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC. Rocchi, who left FC Metz for Israel last summer, has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year contract.

AC Cesena have signed FC Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Alessandro Rosina and Fiorentina centre-back Felipe on loan until the end of the season. Rosina, 27 today, has scored four goals in 24 league appearances for Zenit since joining from Torino FC in summer 2009. He featured in four of the Russian champions' UEFA Europa League group stage games this term. "It was the best option for me," he said after moving to 18th-placed Cesena. "It will give me the opportunity to compete for a place in Zenit's starting XI."

Bundesliga side 1. FC Kaiserslautern have taken SK Slavia Praha's Czech international midfielder Adam Hloušek on loan for the rest of the campaign. Kaiserslauten have the option to take the 22-year-old on permanently. "We have increased our attacking options," said Kaiserslauten chairman Stefan Kuntz. "He is a young, pacey and hungry player who wants to make his way in the Bundesliga. We are convinced he will help us realise our ambitions."

FC Dynamo Kyiv striker André has joined FC Girondins de Bordeaux on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move. The 20-year-old Brazilian international moved to Dynamo last August for €8.1 million but failed to score in three league appearances for the Ukrainian Premier League club. Dynamo president Ihor Surkis said Bordeaux have an option to make the move permanent for approximately €10m.
