FC Skonto snatched the Latvian Virsliga title on the final day to make it ten in a row after FK Ventspils were surprisingly beaten by FC Dinaburg on Saturday.
Early lead
Things started brightly for Skonto at FHK Liepajas Metalurgs who opened the scoring on 32 minutes when Ignas Dedura fired home to put his side one up at the interval.
Chaladze strike
Viktors Dobrecovs equalised for Liepajas in the 55th minute before David Chaladze claimed the all-important winner 16 minutes from time.
Hopes dashed
A draw at Dinaburg would have been enough to ensure a first championship title for Ventspils but the writing was on the wall when Pjotrs Rusaks struck for the hosts on 33 minutes. The goal proved decisive as Ventspils - coached by Englishman Paul Ashworth - could not find a way through and went down 1-0.
Auda in Virsliga
FK Auda can look forward to measuring themselves against Latvia's best, having gained promotion to Latvia's top flight. A 4-1 loss at FK Valmiera condemned FK Stalkers/Zemessardze, as the side who notched up 26 defeats and a measly four points will be playing in the first division next season. Elsewhere FK Riga went down 2-0 to PFK/Daugava.
