Two goals from Jon Dahl Tomasson helped Feyenoord on their way to a 3-2 win over Eredivisie rivals SBV Vitesse on Saturday.

Tomasson on target
Goals in the 39th and 52nd minutes from the division's leading scorer saw the home side build up a 3-1 lead in Rotterdam which Ronald Koeman’s determined side never quite managed to overturn. Feyenoord are now one point behind leaders AFC Ajax on 25 points with both sides having played eleven games – two less than most of the other sides in the division.

Tense finish
Pierre van Hooijdonk opened the scoring for Feyenoord with a direct free-kick after 26 minutes but Vitesse struck back almost immediately when John van Beukering caught out the Feyenoord defence and beat goalkeeper Edwin Zoetebier. However, Tomasson’s goals took the sting out of the visitors and, though Viktor Sikora cut the deficit to 3-2 with a powerful left-foot shot in the 55th minute, Vitesse could not find an equaliser in a tense final half hour.

PSV go fifth
Champions PSV Eindhoven rose to fifth place with a 3-1 win over ten-man NEC Nijmegen. They took the lead after just three minutes through Wilfried Bouma but they were punished for not maintaining pressure upon their opponents when midfielder Jarda Simr levelled the scores on 36 minutes with NEC’s first attacking move.

Schuurman dismissed
It took the dismissal of NEC’s Resit Schuurman in the 64th minute for a foul on Bouma for PSV to fully press home their advantage. Defender André Ooijer put his side 2-1 up with a penalty in the 53rd minute before, three minutes from time, Dennis Rommedahl scored a third.

Own goal
An own goal from Willem II’s Danny Mathijssen saw Roda JC extend their unbeaten run to four games as they earned a 1-1 draw, while FC Twente secured their first away win of the year, beating FC Den Bosch 3-1 at the Oosterpark stadium. Meanwhile at the Alkmaarderhout stadium, AZ Alkmaar were on the wrong end of a 1-0 home defeat after Yuri Cornelisse’s 83rd-minute finish proved to be enough to earn RKC Waalwijk victory.
