Article body
Liverpool FC missed the chance to go top of the FA Premiership on Wednesday night when they were beaten 2-0 by Southampton FC.
Riise error
After a goalless first half, Southampton went in front after 63 minutes when James Beattie scored from the penalty spot after Sami Hyypiä fouled Matt Oakley. John Arne Riise headed Marian Pahars's cross into his own net 19 minutes from time, and Liverpool - who were without the injured Michael Owen - could not hit back.
Poor run
Phil Thompson's side have now won only once in seven league games and they remain fifth in the table on 38 points, but no longer have a game in hand over leaders Leeds United AFC, who have 41.
Southampton on the rise
Southampton, who won 4-2 at Chelsea FC in their last league match, jump five places to 12th with the victory.
