CSKA Moscow have signed Ukraine Under-21 captain Bogdan Shershun from FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
Eighth new face
The Russian club’s purchase is their eighth new signing for the 2002 campaign. Shershun, 20, caught the eye at the UEFA European Under-18 Championship in 2000, when Ukraine finished runners-up.
A step up
CSKA scouts have been tracking him ever since and the player started negotiations over the move in December. After joining CSKA in their pre-season camp, Shershun said: "In my view, the Russian league is much stronger [than the Ukrainian Premier League], and I feel that I have taken a step to a new level."
'Too big a leap'
The Moscow club edged out several German sides in the race to sign Shershun, as the player did not feel ready to move to a western European club. "That what be too big a leap for me," he said.
Started young
Shershun’s career with Dnipro started when he was just 16, when he was invited to join the club by Vyacheslav Grozny, now an assistant to Oleg Romantsev at FC Spartak Moscow, another club to express interest in signing the player.
