Cash problems could sink Atlantis

Veikkausliiga officials should confirm this week if FC Atlantis will remain in the top flight.

The Finnish Veikkausliiga has delayed announcing the details of the new season because of the uncertainty surrounding FC Atlantis.

Joint announcement due
Atlantis are experiencing financial difficulties and it is not known yet what health the club will be in come March when the season commences. "The board of the Finnish Football Federation (SPL-FBF) is meeting on Wednesday and we have decided to make a joint announcement after that meeting," said Jussi Sarvikas, chairman of Finland's first division.

Given until March
Finnish media reported on Tuesday that the Veikkausliiga had given the Finnish Cup holders Atlantis until mid-March to clear up their financial problems. Asked if he was still aiming to have 12 teams in the top division, Sarvikas said: "Obviously that's what we're aiming for but you'll have to wait until after the federation meeting on Wednesday."

Jokerit the obvious replacement
Like many clubs in Scandinavia, Atlantis have been struggling to cope with low gate receipts and a falling transfer market. FC Jokerit, relegated last season, would be the obvious replacement if Atlantis were forced to drop out of the Veikkausliiga.

'Decision on Wednesday'
Atlantis officials declined to comment but Jokerit's managing director, Jukka Suomela, said: "I've been led to believe the decision on Atlantis will be taken on Wednesday."
