Sparta actually dominated the first half but were unable to prevent their hosts from fighting back after the interval. Defender David Mendes Mendes da Silva gave the Rotterdam club the lead just after the half-hour mark with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Deserved equaliser
NEC picked up a deserved equaliser when Dennis de Nooijer headed home a corner in the 65th minute. Both sides then had chances to take all three points but the draw was the fairest result on Friday night.
