Lowly FC Groningen slipped into further trouble at the foot of the Dutch Eredivisie after being comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Willem II.
Landzaat double
Willem took the lead on Thursday night through Russian midfield player Dmitri Shoukov in the 17th minute but Ignacio Tuhuteru managed to level from close range for Groningen 20 minutes later. However Dutch international Denny Landzaat then took over and scored a second-half double to put the game beyond the visitors.
Nine points ahead
Landzaat’s first came from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute, and he followed that up with his second 15 minutes later, after good work from Jattoo Ceesay. The defeat left Groningen on 19 points and firmly stuck in the relegation zone, one place off the bottom. Willem are now nine points ahead of their opponents, and sit halfway in the table.
