Article body
Anorthosis Famagusta FC advanced to the semi-finals of the Cypriot cup in the only game on Saturday after a 0-0 second-leg draw with league leaders AEL Limassol FC ensured a 1-0 aggregate victory at the Tsirium Athletic Center in Limassol.
Missed chances
The visitors put on a backs-to-wall performance in the second half to hold the Limassol club who missed an array of chances to punish Anorthosis. AEL's best chance came in the 75th minute after Vladan Tomic, who only recently made his international debut for Cyprus, saw his powerful shot cannon off Nicos Panagiotou's post and fly into safety.
Anorthosis protests
Anorthosis also had the chance to put the game beyond the league leaders after Marios Neophytou was sent crashing to the ground by the AEL keeper, Athos Chrysostomou, but the referee awarded only a free kick instead of a penalty sparking protests from the Anorthosis bench. In the first leg on 6 February, veteran striker Panicos Xiourroupas scored the only goal five minutes from time for the hosts at Anorthosis's Antonis Papadopoulos stadium.
