Article body
RWD Molenbeek have had their appeal against demotion from the first division to the third division for being in debt turned down by the Belgian Football Association.
Heavy debts
Molenbeek owe a total of €1,457,486 to the country's social security system, the tax system, the VAT system, the players and also to the association itself. The club can give no assurances that these can be cleared.
Could copy Charleroi
Molenbeek are trying to launch a new company which would take over all the debts of the club, a move that rescued R. Charleroi SC from relegation last season. Charleroi set up a new company which paid off debts as a result of receiving a €5m bank loan that was guaranteed by the city of Charleroi. "We want to have the same opportunity," said the Molenbeek president, Erik de Prins.
Following in Eendracht’s footsteps?
The Belgian FA will make the final decision on 25 April as to whether the same fate awaits Molenbeek as has befallen another Belgian Eerste Klasse side, KSC Eendracht Aalst, earlier this month.
