FK Ventspils moved five points clear at the top of the Virsliga with a resounding 4-0 away victory over FK Riga on Sunday.
Zhavoronkov on target
First-half goals from Andrejs Zhavoronkov, Andrejs Butrik and Jevgeni Landirev gave the visitors a comfortable 3-0 lead at the interval. Despite an improved display from the home side in the second half, they failed to find a breakthrough and Aleksejs Durakov completed the scoring with a fourth goal for the visitors three minutes from time.
Maximum points
The win maintained Ventspils' 100 per cent start to the new season and extended their advantage at the summit after second-placed FC Skonto could only draw 1-1 at FC Dinaburg. Vladimirs Kolesnicenko put Skonto ahead after 26 minutes but his effort was wiped out by Eriks Pelcis' 65th-minute equaliser.
Liepajas in charge
In other matches today FHK Liepajas Metalurgs consolidated third place with a 1-0 home success against FK Auda Riga, while FK LU/Daugava defeated FBK Valmiera 2-0.
