Golden Shoe: Jardel set for crown

Members

Arsenal FC striker Thierry Henry finished strongly but was still way behind Mario Jardel.

Thierry Henry climbed eight places to joint-second in the European Golden Shoe standings after scoring twice for Arsenal FC on Saturday but it will make little difference to the final standings.

Joy for Jardel
Sporting Clube de Portugal's Mario Jardel finished his season with 42 goals and is almost certainly the winner, with virtually all of the 2001/02 campaigns finished across Europe. The Brazilian has been out in front for much of the season and fully deserves the accolade.

Henry enjoys celebrations
Henry would have needed nine goals from Arsenal's last two matches to have gone in front of Jardel, but will not be too distraught by falling short. Arsenal beat Everton FC 4-3 at Highbury as the club celebrated winning the league and FA Cup double and Henry's two goals also made him the top scorer in the English FA Premiership with 24 goals. Henry moved up to 48 points, level with Dario Hubner of Piacenza FC and Juventus FC's David Trezeguet.

Few other movers
There were few other movers elsewhere either as the leagues in Italy, Portugal, France, Switzerland and Belgium had already come to an end. In Spain, there was a final round of matches played over the weekend but surprisingly no representatives from the Primera División finished up in the top ten. Diego Tristán of RC Deportivo La Coruña was the highest-placed player from Spain in joint-14th position, some 25 points behind the leader.

  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
